Training

We cater for all our Club Members when it comes to  training. Whether you are a novice and just starting out, or a top runner, there is a group you can join to train with! You don’t have to struggle along on your own anymore!

We have various training options for our members (adults and juniors alike):

Weekly Sessions – all free

Cairns: Tuesday, 5.30pm: Speed work / hill training session with Level Two Coach. Meet promptly at the corner of Greenslopes and Little Street, North Cairns

Social Run in Cairns on Wednesdays at 5.30pm. At the corner of Upward Street and Esplanade, Cairns. Various distances. All abilities catered for.

Trail Run in Cainrs area most Sundays, 8.00am:  Time, locations and distances vary. Check the posts or facebook for updates.

Social Runs on the Tablelands on Tuesdays at 5.30am and Thursdays at 5.00pm. Meet at Hallorans Hill. Also Sunday mornings at various locations in the Atherton area. Come along to meet the other keen, local runners.

Beginner Runners Clinics

These are held a twice a year. The next clinic starts on 23 January 2012.

Please note:

  • Our trail runs are largely, but often not entirely along bush trails, including single tracks, dirt roads and fire trails.
  • There are generally few amenities (water stops/shops/toilets) on these courses.
  • Remember that the times that you might expect to take for these runs will be longer than your regular road runs (maybe as much as 30-40% longer, depending on navigation and roughness of the track) . Travel time also needs to be taken into account.
  • Juniors must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Track running

In conjunction with the Cairns Athletics Club is at Barlow Park (corner of Spence and Fearnley Streets) on Friday nights (approximately 7.00pm) and Sunday afternoons (approximately 2.00pm). On days when the weather is doubtful please phone Shane Watson on 4058 2561 to find out whether competition is still on. You must be a current member of the Cairns Road Runners and in your Club singlet to participate. Cost: $5.00/session. Footwear: Enclosed shoes must be worn at all times. Only non-marking flat soled shoes are allowed on the track surface, except for authorised athletics spikes (7mm on the track surface.)

Marathon and Half Marathon Training Schedules. There are many training schedules available online. Here are a couple that may be of use. Caters for various levels.

Hal Higdon (this is in miles!) – week-by-week schedule with lots of advice.

RW Half Marathon Schedules for your Garmin – also in miles, but includes running times.

    Hi looking at joining the club and improving on my running and distance, 5k is cool, to 7 and 8, so thats why looking at joining to improve for further distances and the social side as well.
    Any info would be greatly appreciated

    • We’d love to have you come along, Craig. Wide variety of abilities in our runners, so you are bound to find someone to buddy up with. Come along to our Wednesday night run on the Esplanade (5.30pm, corner of Upward and Esplanade). There is also a more advanced session on a Tuesday night for those wanting to improve their times – corner of Greenslopes and Little Street by the Botanical Gardens. 5.30pm. Both sessions are free.
